Work in Japan

If a foreigner wishes to work in Japan, he or she should find a job offer first, then apply for a proper working visa for the specific field he or she are going to engage in.

For example, if you find a job as an engineer you should apply for a working visa for the engineering fields. In other words, in case you wish to change your job you are only allowed to work in the permitted working field of your visa. Otherwise, you have to apply for another type of working visa.

There are some residential statuses that permit their owner to work in any field. They are : "Permanent Resident", "Spouse or Child of Japanese National", "Spouse or Child of Permanent Resident" and "Long term Resident".

Tourist visa owners are not allowed to engage in any kind of activity. If they wish to work in Japan they should change their residence status first. "Cultural Activities", "College Student", "Pre-college Student" and "Dependent" need a permit for extra-status activities. Usually they can get the permit to do a part time job only if it doesnt interfere with their studies or cultural activities. Also, the working time is limited to few hours a week. There are several types of baito (part time job) available for foreigners. The most popular one is teaching languages. Japanese people tend to to study foreign languages, especially english, and don't usually mind if their tutor is an english teacher or just a college student.
